One of the most frequent pieces of advice I give to my customers is to choose books THEY enjoy if they want to get their children into reading.
Think of yourself as your family’s reading ambassador – how can you expect your children to enjoy the book if you’re really not that into it yourself? I’ll admit, there are some exceptions – we have a couple of books which I really disliked reading at first (I’ve got issues with their off-beat rhymes!), but I saw how much the children enjoyed them and now I’ve faked the love for so long that I’m a convert!
But if I’m buying the books, I’ll pick the ones I’d be happy to read again and again (AND again!).
Books are a bit like boyfriends, in that you’ve got to try a few before you find out what’s right for you. Don’t worry if it takes you a while to get into your book groove – that’s really not unusual, but please do persevere because you WILL find the books that work for you and your family, and it will be so rewarding.
My personal favourites are anything with a good rhyme and bold or beautiful illustrations, and I love a little learning point thrown in too (I also like a bit of toilet humour – but that’s what you get when you share your house with three little men!).
Still not convinced to put yourself first when it comes to choosing children’s books?
Here are 5 reasons why I really think you should:
You’ll enjoy reading with your little one and want to make book time and integral part of your day
Your enthusiasm and enjoyment will rub off on your little person
You’ll be happy to spend time poring over the illustrations and talking about what else you can see on the page.
You’ll find yourself repeating lines from the book when you’re out and about / in the car, etc (that may sound weird now, but just you wait!)
You won’t mind reading THAT book for the tenth time that day (well, you’ll at least tolerate it a little more!)
Please share your favourite books with me in the comments, and do let me know how you get on with your reading journey.
